Forgotten Landmarks-Armour and Swift Packing Plants, Fort Worth (TX)

Fort Worth Stockyard edit

Armour & Company Plant (Exchange Avenue and Niles City Boulevard)

The Armour plant covered 24 acres and had 15 main buildings, 40 in all.  An immense dock was where 30 refrigerator cars could be iced and loaded. The cooler engine room maintained 500 tons of refrigeration an hour; in the cattle-killing plant animals were disposed of at the rate of 108 an hour.

The side line plant manufactured soap and similar products. In the smokehouse, six floors of ovens contained hams and bacon, all receiving hardwood sawdust smoke from a fire that burned continuously.

Swift & Company Plant (Niles City Boulevard and NE 23rd Street)

This plant occupied 26 buildings in an area of 43 acres. Production processes were similar to those in the Armour plant.
