This travel route explores the National Old Trails Road and later U.S. Highway 66 from Essex to Amboy, California.
The route travels southwest from Essex through the desert floor of the Fenner Valley, roughly parallel to the tracks of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad.
This section of San Bernardino County is also a part of the Mojave Desert.
