The Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded as St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1884, and has been a pillar in Malvern’s African-American community ever since. The church is being nominated to the National Register of Historic Places with local significance under Criterion A for its associations with the religious life of Malvern’s African-American community. The building, which was built in 1916, and designed by the noted church architect, Alfred W. Woods, of Lincoln, Nebraska, is also being nominated under Criterion C as an excellent example of the late Gothic Revival style.
