The travel route explores a path followed by many explorers and settlers from Paxton to North Platte, Nebraska. The route was explored by the Long-Bell Expedition in 1820 and by Captain James Fremont in 1846. The Oregon and Mormon Trails soon followed along the Platte River, branching at the present city of North Platte to follow the North or South forks. Travel continued with the Pony Express, Union Pacific Railroad, Lincoln Highway, and present U.S. Highway 30.
